Description: I have here for sale a book entitled THE GRAPHIC An Illustrated Weekly Newspaper Vol 6 January to June 1872. The Graphic was published on a Saturday and its original cover price was sixpence, while the Illustrated London News was fivepence. In its first year, it described itself to advertisers as "a superior illustrated weekly newspaper, containing twenty-four pages imperial folio, printed on fine toned paper of beautiful quality, made expressly for the purpose and admirably adapted for the display of engravings". In addition to its home market the paper had subscribers all around the British Empire and North America. The Graphic covered home news and news from around the Empire, and devoted much attention to literature, arts, sciences, the fashionable world, sport, music and opera. Royal occasions and national celebrations and ceremonials were also given prominent coverage. This particular bind-up covers balloon flights by Dupuy de Lomes, the eruption of Vesuvius, a full page plate of the Thames Embankment, the proposed Channel Ferry, Sketches from India and a double page plate of Diamond Digging in South Africa.Disbound copy with no boards and no spine covering. Title page, list of illustrations and first 7 pages of the book are all torn with some loss to the bottom right hand corner. Title page is sunned too. Foxing here and there throughout and all pages very loose, with some detached. Incomplete also. Finishes on Page 614 and sentence at end unfinished. That page is dated June 29 so assume last issue but not sure how many there should be in total. Last page here has a large tear.
