Description: This is a nice, original Buffalo Hobo Nickel (J. Allen). J. Allen was the only female carver of hobo nickels. She learned her craft from John F. Press, much as Bo Hughes learned from Bert Wiegand. Like Bo and Bert, often J. Allen's carvings are difficult to distinguish from her mentor's. Fortunately, most J. Allen nickels are signed on the reverse. Pictured here is a slightly bizarre portrait of Albert Einstein. One of the nickels in this lot is reportedly the last carving J. Allen produced, a donation to the early OHNS in 2002. Images of all 16 nickels in this lot are viewable online. The hobo nickel is a sculptural art form involving the creative modification of small-denomination coins, essentially resulting in miniature bas reliefs. The US nickel coin was favored because of its size, thickness and relative softness. However, the term hobo nickel is generic, as carvings have been made from many different denominations. Due to its low cost and portability, this medium was particularly popular among hobos, hence the name "hobo nickel." Natural patina, we have not attempted to clean or polish the metal in any way.
