This barrier island is home to ferral horses that are divided into two groups. The Virginia herd is managed by the Chincoteague Fire Dept. The Maryland herd is managed by the US NPS. The Maryland herd is herded and swim each July to Chincoteague Island. They are undersized horses (14 hands) called "ponies", that are auctioned off.
