No place, date or publisher. There are only a handful of copies cited on Copac, with some suggesting the album was published in London in the 1890s. Contains 7 large composite albumen photographs, mounted (mainly back-to-back) on thick cloth-covered leaves, each with numerous head portraits of famous 'personages' in specific categories. Each with accompanying index with portraits numbered in the grid and with sitter's name beneath in a table. Red cloth binding, with gilt lettering and decoration on upper cover, repeated in blind-stamp to rear. Yellow endpapers. Size: 4to - (album) 33cm x 26.7cm / (photographs, excluding borders of mounts) each 25cm x 18cm.Good condition. Boards somewhat rubbed and marked, in particular the rear cover, with light wear to head and foot of spine. Some light scattered spots to a few leaves. Photographs with some age-toning / yellowing, and a few with minor fading, but overall quite well preserved. Please ask if you require a more detailed condition report, or view gallery images closely.A scarce collection of 7 mounted albumen photographs, in a red cloth album, which has no publishing details, but seems to be from the 1890s.The photographs are reminiscent of a French 'trombinoscope' - a directory of people with accompanying photographs, or a type of early 'facebook' if you like.Each photograph features an assemblage of famous Victorians and characters from history, separated into 7 different categories: Kings & queens of England; Literary & clerical celebrities; The apostles, saints & martys; Eminent women; Military and naval celebrities; The Victoria & Edward group of of modern celebrities; and, Group of bishops.To make the plates, individual portraits have been cut and pasted and then rephotographed as an assemblage.Copac locates only a handful of copies, with differing numbers of plates. The University of Birmingham copy is listed with 9 plates, while the University of Manchester example has 6. Possibly bound to order, with customers choosing from a variety of plates. key words:
