General Interest Can't Buy A Thrill STEELY DANR&P INTERNACIONALINTERNATIONALMUSICFor a band who considered themselves "anti-rock 'n' roll," Steely Dan had a big impact on the rock world from the get-go. This platinum 1972 debut soared to 17 and produced two of their signature hits, Do It Again and Reeling in the Years . This reissue features new liner notes and digital remastering by two highly qualified individuals-Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. . Songwriters Walter Becker and Donald Fagen launched Steely Dan with a seductive, poker-faced 1972 debut as smoothly accessible in its music as it was elusive in its thematic concerns. The opening "Do It Again" snagged swift commercial success as one of the most mysterious pop hits in history, a sultry rock cha-cha that chronicled a series of harrowing catastrophes far removed from the reheated love songs and pro forma counter-cultural rebellion of the day. Though the core band boasted two formidable guitarists, Jeff Baxter and Denny Dias, it was the bloom of Fagen's keyboards and his reedy, smart-ass vocals that carried Thrill light years beyond modal, blues-based rock. That said, an enduring highlight remains the furious six-string fantasia of "Reelin' in the Years", spiked by Elliot Randall's downright historic solos, at once dour and giddy in its indictment of a poser, while "Dirty Work" (featuring short-lived, nominal lead singer David Palmer) offers a decidedly adult vignette of adultery. There isn't a weak track here, astonishing, considering how much growth future Dan albums would display. --Sam Sutherland Review The title of Steely Dans debut album may come from Bob Dylan's It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry, and the bands name a dildo in William Burroughs Naked Lunch, but Cant Buy a Thrill, recorded in Los Angeles with the best session musicians money could buy, seems somehow only distantly related to rocknroll. Cock a cursory ear to this melange of mambo muzak, Latin, swing and jazz and you could be listening to a lounge band on the Catskills circuitmainmen Walter Becker and Donald Fagen were briefly in pop harmony group Jay & the Americans and even penned a song for Barbra Streisand. But beneath the charming melodies and sublime grooves are lyrics every bit as acrid if oblique as, well, Dylans, while the music packs a gorgeous, subtle punch. It became clearer as time went on, but even at this early stage you can tell that Steely Dan, the titans of 70s studio pop along with 10cc, were less a band and more a pair of transplanted New Yorkersso sharp theyve been called the Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld of popwhose job it was to conduct their many players. They appeared to have it all worked out to the nth degreenot one percussive break or dab of flugelhorn is out of place. As with all of Steely Dans albums up to 1980s Gaucho, much credit for this attention to detail must go to producer Gary Katz. So fully-formed is Cant Buy a Thrill that you would scarcely believe that its their debut. Fagens acerbic, nasal croon is not the only vocal hereDavid Palmers dulcet tenor can be heard for the first and last time on a Steely Dan album, taking the lead on Dirty Work and the exquisite Brooklyn (Owes the Charmer Under Me). Drummer Jim Hodder and Fagen duet on Midnight Cruiserthe very definition of bittersweetbut elsewhere Fagen dominates, and so the Steely Dan model is in place: tightly constructed songs with dazzling hooks, clever, cryptic lyrics, and vocals that offer teasing critiques for those that want them. The singles Do It Again and Reelin' In the Years are as beautifully crafted as any AM radio staple, while Only a Fool Would Say That is quintessential Dan: mellifluous yet mordant, easy on the ear but as caustic as any dissection of the American dream. --Paul Lester This link will take you offin a new window Shipping Shipping is free for all customers in Australia.
