ABOUT THE AUTHOR Francis Parkman Jr. (September 16, 1823 – November 8, 1893) was an American historian, best known as author of The Oregon Trail: Sketches of Prairie and Rocky-Mountain Life and his monumental seven-volume France and England in North America. These works are still valued as historical sources and as literature. He was also a leading horticulturist, briefly a professor of horticulture at Harvard University and author of several books on the topic. Parkman wrote essays opposed to legal voting for women that continued to circulate long after his death. Parkman was a trustee of the Boston Athenæum from 1858 until his death in 1893. Parkman’s most celebrated work, The Oregon Trail, is a first-person account of a 2-month summer tour in 1846 of the U.S. states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, and Kansas. Parkman was 23 at the time. The heart of the book covers the three weeks Parkman spent hunting buffalo with a band of Oglala Sioux. Some later printings such as the 18th edition (Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 1969) included illustrations by James Daugherty. CONDITION: VERY GOOD. Bindings are square with firm hinges and joints. Rubbing to boards, spines and extremities. The leather is chipping along the edges, particularly the crown of the spines and corners. The interiors are clean with no foxing or writing with the exception of erased pencil writing on a front blank page of Volume I. The occasional sign of handling or wear - such as a few chips or small tears to a few page margins but in excellent condition overall. Margins of pages age-toned. Overall, a beautiful set in original binding with the very scarce 17th volume of the luxurious Frontenac edition in fine leather binding!
