No Down Payment (1957; WIDESCREEN)Suburban California living in the Fifties was the be-all / end-all of the post-WWII boom times in America: homes financed through the G.I. Bill, sunny skies, barbecues, drinks on the patio, an affair with your neighbor’s wife, lah-dee-dah. Many Hollywood films were shot in such environs, usually light comedies. But here’s a movie that explores that lifestyle’s downsides. The soap opera structure is built around four couples and their triumphs and troubles, lulling us into low expectations during the first introductory minutes but soon enough opening into a social drama of some weight. Unrest between the spouses is insinuated right from the start as we get to know the characters; during the first group get-together the veneer of blissful living is starting to fray and peel …and the fly in the ointment is embodied by the least-likely actor in the cast, Tony Randall (as one critic stated, “You’ll never look at Tony Randall in the same way.”) Several subjects that remain perennial social issues are touched upon but not resolved (neither then, nor in the present day): racial discrimination in housing; the lingering trauma of some war veterans; and over-reliance on credit to attain status. If this sounds boring, be assured that the acting is at the very highest level from Joanne Woodward, Cameron Mitchell (yes, Cam Mitchell, maybe the best work he’d ever done is on display here), Barbara Rush, Pat Hingle, Jeffrey Hunter, Sheree North and Patricia Owens. Marred by a tight wrap-up, but well worth any thoughtful viewer’s time. Hard to find this film, by the way.Philip Yordan’s script was from the pulp-ish novel by John McPartland (The Wild Party; Johnny Cool). Directed by the great Martin Ritt (have a look at his resume, there is not one bad film on it!).
