Limoges, France, Smooth Rims, GOLD Trim, SCHLEIGER Pattern #534 of PINK ROSES & YELLOW & BLUE PANSIES, circa 1894-1931 DESCRIPTION: This set of 3 ramekins with saucers was produced in 1894-1931 time period. The pattern consists of pink roses with lighter pink tinting and green leaves and vines. There are also pansy flowers in yellow & blue with purple faces surrounded by more green leaves. The pattern is identified as Schleiger #534. The rims have gold trim as does the foot of the ramekins. CONDITION: While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. We find no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be absolutely no wear to the colors and no crazing. The lack of utensil scratches on the set attests to the high quality of the porcelain china. See the photos. DIMENSIONS: The ramekins have a top diameter of 4 3/4" and a bottom diameter of 2 1/4". The height of the ramekins is 1 1/4" with a capacity of 2 ounces. The saucers have a height of 9/16” with a diameter of 5 3/16". The diameter of the well on the saucers is 2 3/8". HISTORY/MARKS: The American-born David Haviland settled in Limoges, France in 1842 operating a porcelain exporting business to the USA. He purchased white ware from various factories and shipped it to his New York decorating studio. In 1847, he established a decorating studio in Limoges. He started producing porcelain in Limoges in 1865 and decorating it on site. His sons, Charles Edward and Theodore, continued the prosperous business after David’s death in 1879. Theodore left to establish his own firm in 1892. Charles Edward continued Haviland & Co. until his death in 1921. It bankrupt under his son’s leadership in 1930 and the molds were sold in 1931. In 1941, Theodore’s son, William, was able to obtain the rights to the old Haviland & Co. marks and molds and the company was reorganized as Haviland & Co. William retired in 1957 and the company was carried on by his sons. When the sons retired in 1972, management of the company was turned over to the Cerabati Group under the name of Haviland SA. The company remains in business today. The underglaze mark (in green) on this is mark #12 (Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition) which was used from 1894-1931. These also have red decorator’s mark #13 used 1876-1878 & 1889-1931. This mark specifies that this was manufactured for Thos West & Co. of Savannah, Ga. The Thomas West retailer was located at 187 Broughton Street under St. Andrew’s Hall. An ad from December 27, 1873 solicited business for the Importer & Dealer of Crockery, China and Glassware circa 1894-1931. So, the time period is circa 1900-1931.
