Glanville's book serves as much more than a permanent collection catalogue of the museum's outstanding holdings of silverwork; this publication fills a notable lacuna of information on its subject. Substantive writing on Old English silver was most evident in the 1930s, when a number of historical surveys and sales and collection catalogues appeared in Britain and the United States. For many years, these works comprised the main source of reference for collectors and curators. An example, Charles Oman's English Domestic Silver (London: Black, 1934), had reached its seventh edition by 1968. Some studies focused on specific types of silver, such as plates or provincial spoons. For many years, the Metropolitan Museum of Art's catalogue of the Untermyer collection served as perhaps the most notable museum record. The Victoria and Albert entered the lists in 1948 and 1950, respectively, with two publications in its "Small Picture Books" series, Tudor Domestic Silver and Early Stuart Silver. The Victoria and Albert Museum is home to many important collections of decorative arts objects. Since that time, books on English silverwork have been produced that either concentrate on the more lucrative collecting market of 18th- and 19th-century silver or offer broad surveys of the field, e.g., Gerald Taylor, Silver: An Illustrated Introduction to British Plate from the Middle Ages to the Present Day (Harmondsworth: Penguin, 1956). Glanville's sizeable new contribution, while narrowing its scope to works made between 1480 and 1660, provides new depths of information beyond standard documentation. The author's examination of the museum's collection draws upon scientific analysis and previously unpublished records; additionally, it plunges into aspects of material culture that can serve as models for future research in the decorative arts.  The organization of Silver in Tudor and Early Stuart England proceeds along historical survey lines. The first of three parts treats "The Social Context." Glanville begins with an investigation of patronage issues related to the commissioning of various types of silverwork. The richness of such objects made their creation a story of relationships between the nobility and aristocracy, as in the custom of gift exchanges dictated by holidays and attempts to increase social status. An evaluation of price fluctuations and new data on goldsmiths active during the Tudor reigns are provided. A section on non-English craftsmen explores the relationships between native and alien design influences. The story of English silversmithing during the Civil War period, traditionally blamed for the large loss of earlier silverwork, is amplified and in many cases throws new light on production during those turbulent times. Glanville is strongest in her presentation of gold and silver pattern and design sources. Her investigation into material culture continues into the next part, "Function and Ornament' as the dining chamber, paintings, and documents from the period, as well as various types of vessels, plates, and instruments, are examined in the context of daily and ritual usage.  The remainder of the book consists of the catalogue, arranged into 14 categories of objects, including mazers, standing bowls and cups, post-Reformation liturgical plates, and recusant plates. As with most substantial museum collection catalogues, care has been taken to illustrate each piece and set down all identifying elements, from hallmarks to ther distinguishing marks. The length of each entry's accompanying description is dependent on the uniqueness of the object, and comments include provenance and physical observations of condition. The cumulative result is a benchmark visual and textual survey of silverwork for its period. Scholars and collectors of Old English silver will find the catalogue an invaluable study. The copious illustrations and intricate piecing together of historical and aesthetic details make this work essential to any museum, large public library, or specialized academic collection with an audience for decorative metal.
