Description: Very Rare Keasbey & Mattison double sided flange sign. Keasbey & Mattison was a manufacturer of asbestos building materials, including insulation and shingles. The company moved to Ambler, Pennsylvania in 1881. The decision to move to Ambler was made easier by its location next to the railroad lines, as it meant that they could bring in asbestos from Canada and ship products. The original K&M factory was built in 1883. Before Keasbey and Mattison relocated Ambler was a town of about 300 residents, with a few basic amenities. When the factory was in full swing it employed over 900 people and built up the town, including homes for workers, a library, hospital, stores, a church and many other buildings. By World War I, the companies presence made Ambler known as the “Asbestos Capital of the World “.Keasbey and Mattison was sold to Turner and Newell in 1934. Included in the pictures is a photo of the hills of waste asbestos. Children from the neighborhood used to sled down the mountains of asbestos. The site in Ambler was eventually closed and became a Superfund cleanup site. The sign is in good condition with a few scratches and the flange is bent over to one side.
