Description: UNIQUE ANTIQUE NAUTICAL/MARITIME FOLK ART HANDMADE ENGRAVED COPPER SAILORS KNIFE UNIQUE ANTIQUE NAUTICAL / MARITIME FOLK ART HAND MADE & ENGRAVED COPPER SAILORS KNIFE This is a one-of-a-kind Antique Nautical / Maritime Folk Art Handmade sailors’ knife made from copper and Iron. This handmade Folk Art knife exhibits many early features of the traditional pattern of sailor’s knife pattern with the signature lanyard ring through the blade tang, i.e., copper hilt, dark naturally occurring untouched aged patina, no hilt pins, no backspring, extreme wear of the Master pin, S shaped form referred to as serpent pattern & elongated Iron clip blade, hand engraved embellishments. This small handmade piece is 7 9/16“open with a hilt that is 4 1/4” across x 5/16” thick, made from what seems to be 3 pieces of thick sheet copper material tapering towards the pommel. Weight is heavy for its small size at 3.4 ounces or 96 grams. Copper was widely available and used on sailing ships and is found in many nautical / maritime artifacts. This piece has a simple construction using a copper strip instead of back spring to accommodate the thin 3 7/16” elongated blade that appears to be cut from sheet of 1/16“Iron and an Iron lanyard ring to guard against loss on deck. The backside of the blade tang acts like a blade stop in the open position. The blade appears not to have been sharpened in well over a century, and has a deep dark natural aged untouched patina that collectors covet, with old file marks on the sharpened edge and surface rust with a couple of small spots of saltwater pitting. The untouched naturally occurring dark coloration of copper takes dozens of decades to achieve this patina. This is what the deep natural aged untouched patina on copper looks like and collectors covet. The hilt is not held together by rivets or pins, but the 3 pieces are soldered together in an unusual manner but fits the onboard materials and skills available to make this piece. Note that pocketknives only began having backsprings around 1750 or so using newly invented steel originally made for clock springs. However, this style of sailor’s knife going back centuries were made with no back spring and was continued used well into the 1800’s. This internal slot is twice the width of the blade due to the materials that were then available, so the blade never had any friction that is usually found with the inside of the hilt used as liners to keep the blade closed, and swings freely now, just as it did when made. The blade also has a lot of side-to-side play of about 1/2“, just as it was when made. The Master Iron pin also has worn out both sides of the copper hilt and makes the knife very unwieldy as the blade can only cut when the blade is in the open position and held in place by griping the hilt and holding the blade rigid with the tang stop using the thumb to hold it in place for cutting. The hilt is profusely hand embellished in Folk Art form using line and 2 different types of zig zag punch decoration. The engraving includes 2 fish and one snake with diamond patterns and 4 strange oblong punch decorations. The other side has 3 individual panels with words that were meaningful to the original maker and appears to be URAL SAVA STEVETIO that could be name or a slogan. There are 4 digits that appear to be 1 4 17 which could be a commemorative date such as 1 4 1817, or one of many other different interpretations. The backstrap is also engraved. It should be noted that the very early style Folk-Art markings are not only decorative, but also a carryover from the 17th century and earlier that some believed would fend off evil spirits. This piece is old and in original, as found, untouched condition that adds character.
