Description: Up for sale is this Red Apprentice Miner MSA Comfo Cap Hard Hat with stickers and scrapes, in as-found condition. Folks.... I NEVER clean off old mining hats or remove stickers. Each scrape and ding, each bit of dirt or grime and every sticker tells part of the story. These are personal items, customized to user and reflecting the lives of the folks who went under ground. This is in as-found condition. Use it for display, for your collection, or add a liner and use it as it was intended. Check regulations first, of course! So on to the story..... This, as you can see, is a red hat... the color worn by new miners during their first year on the job. After a year, they can test and be granted permission to wear a black hat. The red helps other miners keep an eye on the new guys and help as needed. On the job training in action. This had is not only red, but on the back corner is a sticker from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection proclaiming the wearing as an "APPRENTICE MINER" including a large letter "A". Various other stickers adorn the hat including one dated 2010... so maybe 'vintage' is a stretch. There are several bits of colored tape, which often carries meaning concerning the wearer's job, and several bits of reflective tape as well. There is no lining in this hat.... if you want to wear it, you'll need to add a lining! I'm selling it as a collectible bit of coal mining memorabilia. Please reach out if you have questions!
