These were used by cavalry or mounted artillery for dress events and not specifically for battles. Overall, this sword is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The pommel, back-strap, quillon and knuckle-bow are all securely fastened to the hilt. They have scattered light oxidation and scrapes. The Bakelite grips have light handling marks and scuffs, but no notable wear. The gold chord is bound tightly around the grip except for two spots where the wrapping is slightly loose. There are no broken pieces. The blade's spine has some very light impact marks. The sides and fullers have scattered light scrapes (almost not worth mentioning) and a couple small scratches. There are a few nicks and dings on the blade edge and it appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. The blade finish is in the white. The left ricasso is marked "ALCOSO" over a balance scale with the letters "A C" and "S". The scabbard is in Good - Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The suspension ring is securely fastened to the body, most of the finish has worn off it and it has oxidized. The throat, body, chape and drag have light oxidation and scrapes. The body has an impact mark approximately 5" from the tip of the scabbard. The sword is still able to completely go into the scabbard though. Most of the original finish still remains. There are no visible markings on the scabbard. This sword and scabbard will be a great addition to your German WWI collection, or a sword collection in general.
